From Car Dealership to Local Mobility Partner: The Components for New Business Models

Replacement and demonstration vehicles have long been a mobility fleet at many car dealerships — and with the right offering behind them, this can become a standalone business model. By positioning yourself as a local mobility partner, you can strengthen existing customers’ ties to the dealership and become an attractive provider for both business and private customers: with a fleet that’s available 24/7 thanks to digital processes, without additional staffing costs. This article shows which specific features of the MOQO platform can be used to make this a reality.

Summary

Car dealerships often already operate a mobility fleet consisting of their replacement and demonstration vehicles — but they typically manage it only as a side task, using Excel spreadsheets, key boxes, and physical fuel cards. Dealerships that instead actively position themselves as local mobility partners can strengthen existing customer loyalty and tap into a new business model. The MOQO platform provides the building blocks for this, from booking via the web or app and digital driver’s license verification to keyless access and real-time vehicle data via built-in telematics. Added to this are multilingual customer service with AI support, digital payment for fuel and reservations, AI-powered damage detection, and self-service access to all billing data — all available uniformly across the entire dealer network via a standardized setup. This transforms the fleet into a service available to both business and private customers around the clock, without additional staffing costs.

At many car dealerships, renting out replacement and demonstration vehicles is still treated as a purely administrative task: an Excel spreadsheet, keys handed over in person, and a gas card in the glove compartment.

In reality, however, this fleet is already effectively performing the functions of a mobility business, only without the appropriate infrastructure and without being designed as a standalone business model — resulting in correspondingly higher personnel costs, more downtime, and little transparency regarding the actual costs.

With the right building blocks, the same fleet can become a profit center: less manual effort, stronger customer loyalty, and a fleet that becomes a source of revenue rather than just a cost center.

Rentals ranging from short-term to multi-month leases

For a car dealership, replacement cars, test drives, and long-term loans often differ only in duration, not in the process. The MOQO platform digitally maps this entire spectrum within a single system, from short-term replacement car reservations during a service appointment to loans lasting several months as part of a demo or test drive subscription.

Providers decide for themselves whether the maximum booking duration for a vehicle or vehicle class is limited — for example, to hours, days, or months — or whether bookings can be made for an unlimited period of time.

Booking via web or app

Customers can book a vehicle either through the web interface or the app: Available vehicles can be found using the map view or by filtering by vehicle type, before the rental period, additional services, and payment method are selected directly during the booking process.

For corporate customers, the platform distinguishes between personal and business bookings, each with its own pricing and billing structure.

Built-in telematics for keyless access and real-time data

If a supported telematics module is installed, there is no need to physically hand over the key: Customers can unlock and lock the vehicle using the app.

This same unit provides real-time GPS location, mileage, and, for electric vehicles, the state of charge. The specific data available depends on the installed module and the vehicle model.

Digital payments with the option of pre-authorization

Bookings are typically paid for afterwards by credit card or SEPA transfer. Providers also have the option to enable pre-authorization: In this case, the amount is initially verified as a card reservation at the start of the booking and is not finally charged until the end of the booking — this reduces payment defaults without slowing down the booking process.

Accounting: Self-service access to all billing data

Providers download the accounts receivable, accounts payable, and statement files themselves. The accounts receivable file reflects payments made via Stripe, the accounts payable file lists all invoices issued, and the statement file provides details on transactions, customers, driver’s license exams, and fees — serving as the basis for their own analysis without the need for manual data entry.

Standardized setup at all locations

In a dealer network, each location currently tends to manage its own replacement vehicle process, resulting in varying procedures and customer experiences. A uniform booking and configuration standard can be applied consistently across all locations without restricting local control.

Features and integrations for efficient workflows

How smoothly day-to-day operations run depends not only on booking and payment, but above all on the details — such as identity verification, customer support, refueling, or claims.

Features such as Class Booking are combined here with integrated partner solutions that automate recurring operational processes and significantly reduce the workload on service staff.

Digital driver's license validation – legally compliant and hassle-free

For car rental companies, renting out a vehicle always entails legal responsibility: In Germany, according to Section 21 of the Road Traffic Act (StVG), vehicle owners must verify that the driver has a valid driver’s license before each trip.

With digital driver’s license validation on the MOQO platform, this process is fully automated, thoroughly documented, and legally compliant. This significantly reduces the workload for service staff at the counter and transforms the onboarding process into a simple self-service experience for customers.

In addition, the app's pre-validation feature enables flexible, contactless vehicle pickups around the clock — even outside of regular business hours.

AI-assisted customer service via chat and phone

Drivers can contact support via chat or phone; both options are AI-powered and available in multiple languages. The AI support system resolves about 90 percent of inquiries on its own, particularly those that are purely informational.

Providers provide their own support instructions for this purpose, which the AI support system prioritizes in addition to its general platform knowledge. Inquiries that cannot be resolved in this way are forwarded by the support system to the provider in a structured manner.

Fueling without a physical fuel card using ryd

Through the integration of ryd fleet, drivers can pay for fuel directly via the app at over 11,000 stations in ten European countries. This simplifies the refueling process for drivers, makes billing more efficient for providers, and makes it easier to prevent fuel fraud.

AI-powered claims management with carvaloo

Through the integration of carvaloo, a sensor on the vehicle automatically detects damage and records the time of the incident. When damage is detected, drivers are prompted to take additional photos before the case is forwarded to the provider, ready for claims processing.

In pilot projects, the number of claims requiring manual review has been reduced by more than 90 percent.

Class booking instead of license plate booking

With the optional Class Booking feature, the platform initially assigns a booking automatically to the booked vehicle class. The specific vehicle is not assigned until about 30 minutes before pickup, based on a configurable algorithm that distributes usage across the fleet.

This increases utilization because no vehicle is tied up by an early booking, and makes it easier to accommodate last-minute cancellations, such as those due to maintenance.

From a side business to an innovative mobility business

Most car dealerships and repair shops already have the vehicles and the demand. What’s often missing is the infrastructure needed to turn this into a standalone mobility service: booking, vehicle data, payment, customer service, and accounting can all be handled through an existing platform like MOQO — from short-term replacement car bookings to long-term rentals lasting several months.

This reduces the manual effort required per booking, minimizes downtime through improved utilization, and makes revenue from the fleet, which was previously lost in flat-rate agreements, more transparent.

Those who supplement their car sales with an independent mobility business don’t need to build a new fleet; instead of positioning themselves as a mere car dealership, they should strategically position themselves as what they’ve long been: an attractive mobility partner for business and private customers.
