ryd fleet: Europe's leading payment operating system for fleets and vehicles

ryd fleet is the payment operating system for fleets and vehicles in Europe. The open, software-based infrastructure standardizes, automat ryd fleetes, and anchors mobility payments directly in the vehicle. With ryd fleet, drivers and companies pay digitally. In this interview, Florian Böhme and Marco Weber explain what really matters.

ryd is Gold sponsor at MOQO Summit 2026 because it is fully integrated as a fuel paymet service

One of the biggest annoyances in carsharing is when charging or fueling at third-party stations is complicated or not possible at all. How does the ryd fleet payment operating system reduce complexity for end users who don't want to install five apps?

Marco: The fragmentation of payment solutions is a real pain point in carsharing – in the worst case, the card doesn't work or isn't even in the car.
With ryd fleet, we bundle fueling, charging, and washing into a single digital system – directly via the app or, depending on the integration, via the vehicle display. The fuel pump is authorized via the app, using geofencing among other things, so that the location of the vehicle and smartphone are matched with the fueling or charging station.
This means:
No searching for PINs and cards. No defective magnetic strips. No waiting times at the checkout.
The user registers once – and pays digitally everywhere. For the carsharing provider, this means: fewer support cases, less frustration at the POS, and a significantly better brand experience.

Why does the physical fuel card persist so stubbornly in Germany, and what is your strongest argument for switching to the ryd fleet app?

Florian:  Physical fuel cards have grown historically and established themselves as the standard over the years. Therefore, many companies continue to use them out of habit – not because they are particularly efficient or future-proof.
Especially in the sharing context, their weaknesses become clearly apparent: cards wear out due to heat and cold in the vehicle. RFID readers or card slots can become loose or fail. Firmware updates can disrupt protocols. Offline situations in underground garages lead to synchronization problems.
In addition, there are administrative processes around expiration dates, reordering, shipping, and the physical exchange of cards in the vehicle. For larger fleets, this is a significant operational effort – especially during in- and defleeting.
The strongest argument for switching to the app is the combination of security, flexibility, and control. Digital payments via app or in-car are tied to the user and vehicle, can be controlled in real-time, and are completely transparent. This is not only more modern – it is operationally significantly more efficient.

Physical fuel cards in pool vehicles are often passed on or misused: What security mechanisms does ryd fleet's digital solution offer to effectively prevent fraud in shared fleets?

Marco: Physical cards are not uniquely tied to a person – and that is exactly where the risk arises. Whether it's noted codes in the vehicle or the fueling of third-party vehicles or canisters.
ryd fleet replaces the plastic card with a digital, user- or vehicle-bound payment. Every transaction is linked with time, location, vehicle, and user, and matched automatically. In addition, information such as the fuel level before and after the fueling process can also be enriched. This makes the solution significantly more secure than a physical card.
For operators, this means: a significantly lower risk of fraud, clean consumption analyses, and full transparency without manual follow-up work.

What strategic advantages does the integration of ryd fleet bring for carsharing fleets?

Florian: Digital payment processes are not just an efficiency issue – they are a differentiating factor.
No frantic searching in the glove compartment, no stress at the checkout, and also no negative experience that falls back on the carsharing provider's brand.
Instead: A seamless, app-based process that fits the digital customer journey.
Especially in a highly competitive market, convenience can become a decisive advantage. And the larger the fleet, the stronger the impact of scalability without card logistics.

Thinking one step further, when will the carsharing car become a general wallet for services beyond just fueling and charging?

Marco: The vehicle is increasingly developing into the central platform for mobility-related services. Our vision is clear: Everything related to driving should be payable directly from within the vehicle.
Fueling, charging, and washing are just the beginning. In the long term, parking, tolls, washing, or even drive-through services will also be included.
The goal is a seamless user experience where the payment process runs in the background – securely, integrated, and without additional apps or physical payment methods.
